My first training ride

by Ryan Sharpe Email

Mary Krucik, a Sacramento Bicycle Kitchen volunteer, has been baking like mad lately and selling off some delicious cookies and ice cream sandwiches at the Kitchen to help the SBK team raise money, and once word gets out about these goodies, fundraising should be a cinch.

Yesterday also happened to be her birthday, and so Dug, Danny, Gerald, and I joined her for a quick ride from the Bike Kitchen out to the bridge over the American River near GoetheRiver Bend Park. Gerald and Mary turned around to head home at the Watt Avenue connector, but Danny, Dug, and I pushed on the last couple of miles. We got to the bridge, rested for a couple of minutes, and then rode back to the Kitchen, cutting through CSUS and down H Street.

All told, we covered about 30 miles round trip in about two hours (nobody checked their odometers or watches before we left). More importantly, though, I learned exactly why bike shorts are such a necessity. Loose cotton fabric isn’t exactly chafe-proof attire.

As a bonus, when I got on my bike to ride to work this morning, I learned why you should inspect your rim tape occasionally.

Miles/hours this trip: 30/2

Wish I was there with you all... I would love to set up a few weekly rides that become somewhat regular things, including a hills/climb ride, at least once a week... You down?
